HERMANN WEGENER BAUSTOFFE GMBH & CO KG

The limestone industry has a long tradition in Walbeck. The owner of the quarry and lime works there today is the company Hermann Wegener GmbH & Co. KG, founded in Bremen-Grohn on 9th January 1897. The Hermann Wegener (HWB) company group has been amongst the technologically leading companies in Germany in the area of processing and refining technology for natural stone for decades.

The long-standing rail-siding systems of the Walbeck lime industry lost significance after the ‘Turn‘ in 1989 and were ultimately no longer used. It was only after the company Hermann Wegener GmbH & Co. KG took over the production plants that, after the rectification of defects by the Lappwaldbahn in 2010, it was reactivated. In the following year, a new train loading system was completed with federal funding.

Today, several limestone block trains leave the siding train station each week, predominantly with destinations across northern Germany.
